From the Archives of Swami Jyotirmayananda
In the vast ocean of Vedantic literature, few concepts are as empowering and terrifying as Sankalpa (Will or Resolve). It is the engine that drives the cycle of birth and death, yet it is also the very tool required to break that cycle. In this lecture, Sri Swami Jyotirmayananda, the last direct disciple of Swami Sivananda, decodes the teachings of Sage Vasistha to reveal how our reality is not an external imposition, but a projection of our own internal programming.
The Two Types of Will
Swamiji begins by distinguishing between two fundamental types of resolve that govern the human experience:
- Ignorant Sankalpa: This is the instinctive will to maintain individuality, to survive, and to seek pleasure in the world of names and forms. It is the force that keeps the soul bound to the wheel of Samsara (repeated birth and death).
- Sat-Sankalpa (True Resolve): This arises when the mind is purified. It is the singular, profound aspiration: “May I attain liberation. May I transcend this mirage.”
The Boat Analogy: The Resultant Force
A common question arises: “I want to be spiritual, so why do I still struggle?” Swamiji uses the analogy of a boat tied by ropes pulling in four different directions (East, West, North, South). The boat does not move in the direction of just one rope, but follows the resultant force of all the pulls combined.
Similarly, your life’s trajectory—and your transition at the moment of death—is determined not by a single conscious thought, but by the resultant vector of all your subconscious desires (Vasanas). If the strongest pull is toward worldly attachment, the soul is led into another embodiment that matches that frequency.
The iPad Metaphor: Programming Reality
Bridging ancient wisdom with modern technology, Swamiji compares the mind to an iPad. The device only displays what you have programmed into it or downloaded. The world you experience—its tragedies, comedies, and suspense—is simply the content you have allowed into your mental interface.

The instruction is clear: First, improve the programming (clearing the “files” of worry and ego). Second, realize you are the user, not the device.
The Chain of Causation: Catching the Spark
To master Sankalpa, one must understand the chain of causation in the mind:
- Samskara: Deep, latent impressions in the unconscious.
- Vasana: The sprouting of those impressions.
- Vritti: The ripple or wave of thought in the conscious mind.
- Trishna: The intense craving that leads to action (Karma).
Swamiji advises that the only vulnerable point in this chain is the Vritti stage. Like a tiny spark, a thought can be easily crushed with two fingers. But if you feed that spark with attention and indulgence, it becomes a blazing fire of sorrow that requires a “fire department” to extinguish.
Scholar’s Corner
- Source Text: Yoga Vasistha, Sthiti Prakarana, Sections 54-55.
- Key Teaching: The world is Sankalpa-Matra (born of resolve alone). When the mind ceases to project, the world ceases to bind.
Glossary of Terms
- Sankalpa: Will, resolve, or intention.
- Sat-Sankalpa: Pure resolve directed toward Truth/God.
- Samskara: Latent mental impression.
- Vasana: Subtle desire or tendency.
- Vritti: A modification or wave of the mind.
Conclusion
The path to freedom requires us to cultivate Sat-Sankalpa. By repeatedly hearing the Truth and engaging in self-effort, we shift the ropes pulling our boat, steering it away from the stormy seas of the world and toward the harbor of eternal peace.
