Insight into Sutra 48: The Highest Attainment

From the Archives of Swami Jyotirmayananda

Have you ever felt like you are constantly bouncing back and forth between joy and sorrow, success and failure? In the vast ocean of existence, our souls are often tossed like waves, driven by the winds of our actions and their results. But what if you could stand firm, like the sky, unaffected by the passing clouds?

In this insightful teaching on the Narada Bhakti Sutras (Sutras 48-49), His Holiness Swami Jyotirmayananda explores the pinnacle of devotion—where love for God transcends all rituals, expectations, and worldly attachments.

The highest goal in spirituality is universal. Whether you follow the path of Bhakti (Devotion), Jnana (Wisdom), Dhyana (Meditation), or Karma (Action), the destination is the same. As you advance, these paths merge. You cannot separate your heart from your intellect; they are part of one integrated personality. When wisdom dawns, the heart naturally expands with love. When devotion deepens, wisdom automatically follows.

Understanding the Illusion of Identity (Maya)

Swamiji describes the world process as an ocean of Maya. We cling to our current identities—father, mother, son, daughter—forgetting that in previous embodiments, we played entirely different roles. If we could see a photograph of our past ten lives, we would be amazed at how transient our current “reality” actually is. To attach yourself solely to this temporary identity is to remain trapped in the cycle of birth and death.

I Am Not the Doer: The Art of Renouncing Karma

To cross this ocean, one must renounce the fruits of karma (action). This does not mean stopping work. It means shifting your focus. Instead of working for a future reward (which is always fleeting), you work to generate Purity of Heart in the present.

You adopt the attitude: “I am merely an instrument in Divine hands.” When you realize that God is the true doer, you become free from the Dvandvas—the pairs of opposites like pleasure and pain, gain and loss.

Cultivating Puja Bhav: Work as Worship

How do we practice this in daily life?

  • Puja Bhav: Treat every project as worship. You don’t need a temple to be a devotee; your workplace is your altar.
  • Anasakti Bhav: Practice detachment. Like oiling your hands before cutting a sticky jackfruit, oil your mind with devotion so the world’s “glue” doesn’t stick to you.
  • Sakshi Bhav: Become a witness. Observe the clouds of life without trying to control them.

  • Kena Upanishad: Swamiji retells the famous story of the Yaksha (Spirit) humbling the Wind God and Fire God to show that all power comes from Brahman, not the individual ego.

Sutra 49: Renouncing Even the Vedas

The teaching concludes with a radical idea: the true devotee renounces even the Vedas. This refers to transcending the ritualistic aspect of scriptures (Karmakanda) that promises rewards like heaven. When you attain God-realization, you no longer need the map; you have reached the destination. Your life itself becomes a scripture, flowing with an uninterrupted stream of divine love.
