The World as a Projection: A Mental Landscape

From the Archives of Swami Jyotirmayananda

Have you ever wondered if the world you see is truly “out there,” or if it is a sophisticated creation of your own consciousness? In Section 35 of the Sthiti Prakaraṇa, Sri Swami Jyotirmayananda explains that this world is nothing but a projection of the mind.

From the towering mountains to our dearest friends and bitterest enemies, every experience is mediated through our nervous system and fueled by our mental impressions.

As long as the waves of thoughts rise again and again, the world must be experienced by the soul. Swamiji uses the modern analogy of an iPad—the world is like data being processed. If the device is put away, the “news” that agitates us vanishes.

Similarly, in deep sleep, the world disappears because the mind is at rest. The reality behind all these illuminations is Caitanya, or Pure Consciousness.

Navigating the Inner Obstacles: Overcoming the Mind’s Three Errors

To realize our essential nature, we must ruthlessly destroy the “Vikalpas” or mental imaginations. These typically manifest in three crucial stages:

  1. Saṁśaya (Doubt): A mind that cannot make a choice, like someone trying to cross a river with a foot in two different boats.
  2. Asaṁbhāvanā (Judgment): The false belief that enlightenment is impossible for us.
  3. Viparīta Bhāvanā (Misconception): Missing the direct reality, like looking at a face in the mirror and forgetting you are actually looking at the mirror first.

The Cocoon of the Soul: From Imprisonment to Liberation

Just as a silkworm becomes imprisoned in its self-created cocoon, the individual soul (Jīva) becomes involved in the body, mind, and numerous Karmas.

This cycle is sustained by Vāsanās (subtle desires). By purifying these impressions—moving from Aśubha (impure) to Śubha (pure)—the mind transforms from a prison into a step-ladder to spiritual height.
