From the Archives of Swami Jyotirmayananda
We often look outward for peace, searching the external world for a sense of completeness. Yet, the true source of all joy rests quietly within. Sri Swami Jyotirmayananda, the last living direct disciple of Swami Sivananda, offers a profound perspective on Antaryami—the indwelling self.
His timeless teachings remind us that we already possess the treasure of divine knowledge (vidyanidhi). We are not here to acquire something entirely new or foreign; rather, by softening our minds and becoming sensitive to this ancient wisdom, we awaken the divine connection that already exists within us.
When we approach these teachings with humility, removing the harshness of the ego, we allow real vidya (wisdom) to blossom and illuminate our path.
The True Meaning of Antaryami
What exactly is this innermost self? Swamiji clarifies that it is not merely the identity tied to your physical body or your transient thoughts. The innermost self is Antaryami, the ruling force of the entire cosmos. It is the intelligence that dwells in the sun, guiding its brilliance without the sun even knowing it.
Look closely at the natural world. Consider a blade of grass growing from the soil. What intelligence allows it to draw the exact chemicals needed to sprout? What invisible force brings forth beautiful flowers? It is the exact same Divine Source that resides in your own heart. Recognizing this creates a profound shift in perspective. You are not an isolated fragment in a vast universe; you are intimately sustained by the exact same essence that governs the stars.
The Metaphor of the Sun and the Water Pots

A common question arises on the spiritual path: Does God have favorites? If God is equal to all, why does it seem that certain devotees receive more grace?
Swamiji provides a beautiful, visually resonant metaphor to resolve this tension. Imagine thousands of pots filled with water. Some pots contain muddy water, some have turbulent and shaking water, while others hold water that is completely still and crystal clear. The sun shines equally upon all of them from above.
However, the sun reflects perfectly and brightly only in the pot with clear, still water. This is not favoritism on the part of the sun. The clear water represents the nirmal mind—a mind free from the impurities of anger, greed, and conceit. When you purify your mind, the universal grace of God naturally reflects within you in a special, radiant way.
The Four Forms of Grace (Kripa)
To reach this state of clarity and experience profound reflection of divine grace, one must understand how grace operates. Swamiji outlines four distinct levels of Kripa (grace):
- Atma Kripa (Grace of the Self): This is the foundational grace. It is the moment you develop an earnest aspiration for enlightenment or a sincere wish to be guided on a spiritual path. Without your own internal willingness, external help cannot take root.
- Guru Kripa (Grace of the Teacher): Once you have the inner aspiration, you are naturally led to a spiritual preceptor who provides guidance and direction.
- Shastra Kripa (Grace of the Scriptures): The scriptures can be elusive if read purely intellectually. True grace of the scripture occurs when the words you read stop being mere theory and begin causing a transformational change in your personality.
- Ishwar Kripa (Grace of God): This is the ultimate, profound level of grace that culminates in liberation and absolute peace.
The Inner Army (Chaturanga Sena)
The process of purifying the mind is often likened to a great battle against ignorance. Swamiji beautifully decodes the ancient concept of the Chaturanga Sena—the four-limbed army of a king, traditionally consisting of foot soldiers, horses, elephants, and chariots.
In the realm of integral yoga, every individual is a soul equipped with their own spiritual army to overcome the forces of darkness:
- Foot Soldiers: Represent Karma Yoga (the yoga of selfless action), providing the steady foundation.
- Horses: Represent Bhakti Yoga (the yoga of devotion), which provides the driving force and swift movement toward the divine.
- Elephants: Represent Dhyana (meditative practices), symbolizing immense focus and steady strength.
- Chariots: Represent Jnana (wisdom), providing the structural vehicle of truth and understanding.
When these four forces are cultivated and united within your personality, you possess the strength to completely dissolve the ego and realize the ultimate reality of Antaryami.
Scholar’s Corner
This lecture draws heavily upon the historical context of the Tulsi Ramayana (Ramcharitmanas), Bal Kanda, specifically surrounding Doha 149. In this section, King Manu and Queen Shatarupa perform intense austerities. When Lord Rama appears before them, Manu presents a wish born of profound, loving impertinence:
dāni siromani kṛpānidhi nātha kahauṃ satibhāu |
cāhauṃ tumhahi samāna suta prabhu sana kavana durāu ||(O crown of donors, ocean of compassion, O Lord, I tell you my true feeling: I want a son exactly like you. What is there to hide from the Lord?)
Because there is no one else equal to God, the Lord agrees to incarnate as their son in a future life (as King Dasharatha and Kaushalya), setting the stage for the descent of the Divine into the human realm.
