The Power to Save Yourself: Overcoming Inner Turmoil Through Vedanta

From the Archives of Swami Jyotirmayananda

When the mind is caught in a state of severe distress, it can feel exactly like a drowning animal struggling in a rushing river. The waters of anxiety rise, panic takes over, and a desperate search for an external savior begins. We look to our circumstances, our friends, or society to pull us to safety.

Yet, Sri Swami Jyotirmayananda, the last living direct disciple of Swami Sivananda, offers a profound shift in perspective rooted in ancient scripture: the only one who can truly rescue you is you. Because the soul is inherently divine and complete, the power to overcome the mind’s turbulence is already resting within your own heart. By turning to the timeless teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, we learn how to calm the turbulent waters and finally find our footing.

Atma Samyama Yoga: The Mastery of the Self

The sixth chapter of the Bhagavad Gita focuses entirely on Atma Samyama Yoga—the mastery over the lower self to realize the higher Self. In simple terms, this is the profound practice of meditation.

Sri Swamiji reminds us that this practice is not just about sitting perfectly still for hours; it is about bringing harmony to the mind and body so that our true, peaceful nature can shine through. Every soul holds a vast treasure of divine knowledge, and mastering the self is simply the process of clearing away the distractions that hide it.

Drawing the Senses Inward: Pratyahara

Before the mind can be still, we must address the senses that constantly pull our attention outward. This conscious withdrawal is known as Pratyahara.

When the mind has no illusions about the fleeting objects of the world, the senses naturally draw inward. Sri Swamiji points out that when we relax our rigid expectations and step back from the constant outward pull, deeper spiritual resources open up for us automatically.

The Ultimate Rescue: Lifting Yourself by Yourself

When you experience suffering, it is easy to look around and ask who is to blame, or who will come to save you. Sri Swamiji uses a powerful analogy: if you are having a nightmare, crying out for help in a room full of sleeping people, no one can rescue you from the dream but yourself.

You are the one who has allowed the mind to sink into fear, and therefore, you are the only one who can lift yourself out. Awakening from the dream of inner turmoil requires taking absolute responsibility for your own spiritual progress and inner liberation.

The Conquered Self Becomes Your Greatest Friend

We observe a world filled with pairs of opposites: heat and cold, success and failure, honor and dishonor. If our roots are shallow, a slight breeze of misfortune can completely shake us.

But when we apply these teachings and conquer the lower impulses of the mind, a beautiful transformation occurs. Your own mind becomes your greatest friend. You learn to witness changing situations with the serene stability of the sky watching clouds pass by—untouched, unbroken, and forever anchored in the divine.
